Great Pumpkin Run, Oct. 28

Great Pumpkin Run 2017

Dress up, join the fun, and run to help support local cancer research efforts at the Great Pumpkin Run for Research on October 28.

The annual 5K run, health walk, and half-mile kids’ fun run event offers activities for the whole family, including healthy lifestyle exhibits, face painting, Halloween costume contests, and a pumpkin decorating contest.

The half-mile fun run starts at 8 a.m. at Betty Virginia Park, and the 5K will start at 8:30 a.m. at the park with a scenic route through the South Highlands area. Registration for the 5K is $20 through September 30, $25 through October 27 and $30 on race day. Registration for the half-mile fun run is $15 through October 27 and $20 on race day. Early registration is recommended – participants registered by Oct. 22 will receive an official 2017 Great Pumpkin Run for Research long-sleeved T-shirt. For those registering after that date, shirts will be available while supplies last. Click here to register online or stop by Sportspectrum, 6970 Fern Ave. in Shreveport.

All proceeds from the Great Pumpkin Run for Research stay in Shreveport to support cancer research at LSU Health Shreveport’s Feist-Weiller Cancer Center. Fundraising projects allow Feist-Weiller to award grants to researchers to develop their work in their individual areas of expertise. Scientists have leveraged $1.6 million raised locally into $14.3 million in national grants.

Race packets will be available for pick up at Sportspectrum from noon-6:30 p.m. Oct. 26 and from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 27. Packets may also be picked up at the race site starting at 7 a.m. on race day.

Overall male and female winners in the 5K will receive an award, and First and Second Place male and female winners in each of the following age groups will also receive an award: 18-under, 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70 and above. Cash prizes of $250, $150 and $100 will be awarded to teams with the largest number of registered participants.
