Allen A Copping Award

The Allen A. Copping Excellence in Teaching Awards is given at both medical school campuses in the LSU system. This award recognizes those whose teaching skill sets the standard for excellence in academic performance. It is the highest teaching award in the School of Medicine and is presented at the school’s main commencement exercise in May.

The Allen A. Copping Endowed Chair provides the funding for this prestigious award. Dr. Allen Copping served as Chancellor for both the LSU Health Science Centers in Shreveport and New Orleans from 1974-1985. He then served as LSU System President from 1985-199. The Endowed Chair was funded by friends and colleagues and then established by the Board of Regents in 1995 with matching funds.

This award is given yearly to select individuals “who are uniquely gifted in imparting knowledge, possess a lifelong quest for discovery, lead by example, foster a sense of caring and compassion, and inspire the young men and women in whose capable hands will rest the health and well-being of the people of Louisiana.” Selection for these awards is based strictly on teaching without significant consideration of research or non-teaching activities. Each year this award is given to a basic science faculty member and a clinical sciences faculty member. Award recipients are selected by their leaders, colleagues and most importantly, by their students. These awards are of high visibility and carry a substantial cash prize as well as a special signature piece.
